On the 3rd of March, Bernd Daehne and Lukas Kuhn from the Brill Institute for Antifouling and Biocorrosion once again took part in a cleaning initiative of Norderney's beaches. The campaign was carried out together with the local BUND district group and the pupils of the 7th grade of the "Kooperative Gesamtschule Norderney". A total of 880 kg of trash was collected. The largest and heaviest part was made up of four fishing nets.

Life Science Nord has made a really great film about the HiHeal network that you should definitely watch!

The HIHeal project creates connections between regional companies, scientific institutions, hospitals and funding partners with a focus on infection control and hygiene.

At the same time, we would like to thank all of you who visited us at MEDICA 2022 in Düsseldorf in November. It was a great pleasure for us to maintain, refresh and make so many new contacts there.

ICEBIO is a PhD network that will train the next generation of experts in glacier microbiology and biogeochemistry.

ICEBIO will provide a database of the functional diversity and potential of the glacier biome, which will not only greatly improve our understanding of a threatened biome, but also demonstrate the potential for exploiting economic and ecological services.

Dr. Brill + Partner GmbH will, among other things, provide a risk assessment regarding pathogenic organisms from the glacier biome, including the inclusion of bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

At the end of November, the time had finally come: The 8th Conference of Applied Hygiene, Microbiology and Virology once again attracted an international audience of experts with participants from 15 nations to the AMRERON Hotel Hamburg Speicherstadt and online participants in front of their screens.

The lecture topics were again of great interest and in some cases stimulated an intensive exchange, with numerous questions also being asked online - and the social program in the evening went down very well, too.

Once again, a big thank you to all participants and speakers for making CAHMV 2022 such a success, and especially also to our sponsors GOJO, Dr. Weigert and BioGenius.

The 9th Conference of Applied Hygiene, Microbiology and Virology is planned for 30 November - 01 December 2023, as usual as a hybrid event online and in the Hamburg Speicherstadt. Please save the date. We look forward to seeing you again, then perhaps with a joint mulled wine in the evening?

And in order to be a good partner to you in the usual competent manner with regard to this issue, we develop tests for you and with you on the subject of antimicrobial wound treatment products. Since this sector still has some catching up to do in terms of international standards, but we already see a need for action today, we are active on various issues. In particular, the establishment of the concept of biofilms in the context of wound treatment is of great interest, because its special properties must first be understood and taken into account in the treatment. Therefore, we conduct research with our collaboration partners (e.g.: Prof. Dr. med. Ewa Stürmer, UKE; PD Dr. Cornelia Wiegand, Jena University Hospital; Dr. med. Thomas Eberlein, Woundconsulting) on various topics and share our findings on an expert stage:

• Influence on decolonization and biofilm reduction of urinary tract catheters by rinsing with polyhexanide (DOI: 10.1186/s12894-018-0362-3 and 10.1186/s12894-021-00826-3)
• Antimicrobial wound dressings in their effectiveness against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms (DOI: 10.3389/fmicb.2021.664030)
• Alternative treatment of biofilms by stimulating wound healing using “Pulsed low-intensity laser treatment” (DOI: 10.1016/j.jphotobiol.2022.112504)
• Development of a new 3D skin infection model as an alternative to animal models as part of the "InVitroWund" cooperation project (DGKH Congress 2022, CAHMV Congress 2021)

Do you have an interesting project on the subject and do you need advisory support? Due to our strong commitment at standardization level and our broad network, we can offer you our help even before the experimental work.

Do you already have a question that you would like to support experimentally? Then please contact us. This can be in the context of biofilms but also generally on the subject of wound dressings. We not only offer you the standard tests that you need for your approval (e.g.: suspension tests according to EN 13727 and EN 13624). We also plan and carry out projects based on our established in-house methods in order to achieve standardization today, even without an internationally valid standard.

Is your project planning possibly still in the future? Then we are pleased to inform you that prEN17854:2022-07 has currently reached draft status, so that we may soon be able to offer you an internationally valid test standard.
